Breeding Lovebirds

1.Getting a true pair of lovebirds

Choosing a true pair of lovebirds is really important. Spend time in the pet shop to choose for a pair. If not it takes time for your new pair to breed.

2.Cage consideration and Nesting boxes

A pot is apt for a love bird for nesting. Because of its small area the eggs will be warm at all cause.

But we can also use nest box that allow you to keep an eye on the eggs and chicks after hatching.

3.Nesting Materials

Many experts suggest you to use papers or hay as a nesting material. But my love bird removed all the nesting material and kept the pot clean before laying the eggs. And it found no problem on hatching the eggs.

So my advice is to choose the nesting materials depending upon the mood of your lovebird. If it removes the nesting materials do not worry.

4.Egg Laying

The first egg is laid within 10 days after mating. The lovebirds eggs are laid in the nest every other day. The hen usually starts to brood (sit on the eggs)after the second egg is laid. It takes up to 10 days for them to be laid.

5.Egg hatching

Fertile eggs will hatch in about 20-23 days. Your hen will be very protective of the eggs. She will just sit on them. When they hatch both parents will be protective and they will feed the babies.

6.Caring the chicks

You can pull the babies out of the next box in 2 weeks or so, when their eyes are open and they are moving about. Get a proper hand feeding formula for baby birds. Make sure you know what you're doing! But my advice is to leave the chicks in the nesting box under the care of its parents for around 30-45 days.

Tips and healthy foods to be provided:

  • Proper change of water at regular interval is important, have a regular monitor on water. Maintain clean water else it may disturb the health of the bird.
  • Foods like millets are enough for a love bird, feed the bird with tulsi and corriander leaves alternatively which improves the health of the bird and chicks.
You can see that the female bird rolls over the tulsi, chews and applies the tulsi all over its body. It acts as a natural pesticide and protects the chicks from ants and other insects.

Lovebirds are wonderful creatures and you will love to care the birds and love its characteristics. Lovebirds clean each others feathers and feed each other and it will be a wonderfull sight to see.
